Every morning I wake up & grab my phone to see whats going on in the world. Today, one of the first tweets I read was from Global Grind announcing that Adam Yauch aka MCA of the Beastie Boys was dead at the age of 47.
He was a true legend in Hip-Hop & a huge influence to me. For those who know my history, my old group got its name from a Beastie Boys lyric so you already know the connection that I had with the group.
To be honest though, growing up I was not the biggest fan of their early albums. Once Hello Nasty was released, I began to go back & recognize their genius. Their music broke down color walls & is enjoyed by people of all walks of life, which is the way I think it should be.

I don't usually post Edits on SoundCloud, but with the unfortunate passing of MCA I wanted to share one I did to give the DJs something to show respect for the man. I made this Edit last month before I opened for Pete Rock. It is probably my favorite Beastie Boys song:

If you know me, you already know that I am a huge Biggie fan & with the Anniversary of his death this week I wanted to give back something special. Before there were blogs with any song you could ever want, I would comb every Record Store I passed for CD versions of tracks that The Notorious B.I.G. appeared on. I wanted to put some of these rare gems from my personal collection to good use, so I decided to make some DJ Edits of his verses you rarely here & which are hard to find in high quality. All except one of the 20 in the ZIP ("Cunt Renaissance") were ripped directly from CD & edited from there.
Most of these did not have Instrumentals available so I had to get creative with the edits. These aren't meant for some Freejay looking for Biggie's "Greatest Hits", but rather for DJs who are looking for something different to sneak into their Hip-Hop sets. He murdered every track he got on & everyone loves his voice so you really can't go wrong with him. Many of these are Quick Edits too, so you can easily get in & out of them. One of my personal favorites, "Who's The Man" is from Doctor Dre & Ed Lover's album "Back Up Off Me", who at the time were hosts of "Yo MTV Raps." Big ends his stellar verse with "Who's the man... I see him every morning in the mirror"... classic!

Also, last month "Get Naked" was the #1 Downloaded song on Serato's Record Pool WhiteLabel.net ahead of huge singles from Lil Wayne & Drake. Needless to say I was pretty excited, here is a screen shot:
One of my favorite shows last year was Master of the Mix, so when the auditions for Season 2 came through Atlanta, DJ Camille & I made sure we were ready. We had only 2 minutes to impress the judges so we had a lot to cover in a short period of time. The night before I made some custom edits & practiced running through them many times. Practice is one thing but when your audience is Kid Capri, DJ Mars & Rich Medina, it is a little more nerve racking. They could tell I was nervous but in the end they were all impressed with my set & I was the 1st DJ in ATL to get the ticket to the 2nd round. The feedback I received from them was amazing & I will take the advice they gave with me every time I get behind a pair of 1200s.
While the camera crew was interviewing me after my set, I could see my girl jumping up & down out of the corner of my eye. I had a hard time concentrating on the interview because I knew she made it too & I couldn't wait to congratulate her. It was an exciting day for me & to be able to share that celebration with Camille made it even better. We are eagerly awaiting the next round & will definitely be ready for whatever challenge comes our way.
For those that don't know, a few years ago my girl DJ Camille worked on an album with Killer Mike & the talented production duo Beat Bullies. It never saw the light of day, but resulted in a lasting friendship with them all.
We were fortunate enough to be around during the creation of the 3rd Volume in Killer Mike's Pledge series, which was released a few weeks ago. I bought the CD the day it dropped & haven't taken it out of my player since. In this day of disposable albums fueled by a few singles, "Mike Bigga" delivers a complete album with a high replay value. If you haven't heard it yet, I suggest you do that ASAP!
Being from the North & spending the last 16 years down South, I have a unique perspective on Hip-Hop. Since I left NY my tastes have definitely changed, but hearing this CD took me on a trip down memory lane. If you are unfamiliar with Killer Mike, the best way I could describe him is the Dirty South version of Ice Cube. His knowledge goes way beyond bars & beats. He sees what is going on in the world & isn't afraid to share his opinion. Pl3dge has that same raw energy as O'Shea Jackson did on his first few albums & that is something that has definitely been missing from Hip-Hop lately.
One day, Camille & I were at Stankonia Studios while Mike was working on Pl3dge & I had the chance to make a small contribution to the final product. He was in need of some sound effects on a few songs and one of them made the final cut. On the Gucci Mane assisted track "Animal", I provided the elephant & leopard growls, which help add some extra energy to this already crunk track.

Growing up in Upstate NY, there were very few Seattle Supersonics fans. Hell for all I know, I may have been the only one. The main reason I was drawn to that team was because of one player, Shawn Kemp. His powerful dunks were unlike anything I had ever seen & the way he blocked shots was enough to make any player think twice before driving down his lane. In my eyes The Reign Man, as he was also known, was a human highlight film. I had a VHS tape packed with amazing plays from Mr. Kemp, which I literally watched hundreds of times. There were many great players in the game but none of them impacted me like Shawn Kemp. Last year through the help of facebook, I reconnected with an old friend who left our High School in New York to move across the country to Seattle. It was more than 15 years ago since the last time my friend Mike & I played basketball, but apparently he never forgot that I was a fan of Shawn Kemp. A few weeks ago, he hit me up & told me he had a surprise for me. Mike asked me to mail out some copies of my new CD to him. He works for a radio station so my brain begin to come up with possibilities for what kind of surprise he had in store for me.
Yesterday he sent me this picture with the words "You grew up a fan of his, now he's a fan of yours! :)"
The man in the picture is Shawn Kemp holding the Mixtape I did with Lil Jon. Mike gave him a copy & had the other one autographed for me. I can't begin to tell you how happy I was when I received this message. I always knew that Mike was a special guy but the fact that he went out of his way years later to bring a smile to an old friends face was simply amazing. This was the last thing I could have imagined my surprise would be, but to be honest nothing could top it! Thanks again buddy!
